When you need a chromatic tuner
A chromatic tuner is not tied to strings: it shows the nearest of the twelve notes and how far you are from it. It suits flute, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, harmonica, synthesizer, voice and any string instrument in an unusual tuning.
- Play a long steady note — the needle shows the deviation in cents.
- For baroque music set A to 415 Hz, for an orchestra — 442 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
How is a chromatic tuner different from a guitar tuner?
A guitar tuner looks for the nearest string of the chosen tuning, while a chromatic tuner looks for the nearest note of all. For unusual tunings the chromatic one is handier.
